Paid In Full: What Is the True Cost of Serving?

We made it!

We have arrived at the tenth obstacle in our Ten Barriers That Block Christians From Serving series.

After time traveling to the past to learn about how the families we came from have influenced the families we have created, we learned about our roles as caretakers for all of God’s creation. We learned that storms are easier when weathered together and not to discount our efforts, no matter how big or small when volunteering.

We discovered it’s ok to not know how to start. We learned to keep it simple by beginning well, at the beginning.

We served ourselves slices of humble pie by practicing humility and renewed our faith to help combat fear.

Today, in the final post of this It’s Your Serve series, we calculate the cost of NOT serving.

Yes, helping others has a cost and it can seem high.

I assure you, the debt has already been paid.

The Cost of Helping

Sacrifice is inherent to service.

Our resources. Our money. Our hearts. Our time.

Surrendering to service means opening yourself up to growth. Embodying a servant’s heart means at times you may be asked to step outside of your comfort zone and serve in ways that are not your strengths.

It means canceled plans (tornadoes and hurricanes do not take into account your vacation plans or deadlines at work).

It means disappointments. (People will let you down).

It means heartache. (There will be times when you may feel overwhelmed with how much more there is to do after all you have already done.)

It also means being a part of something bigger than you, fulfilling the highest calling, and learning to love others as God loves us.

Unconditionally.

The Debt Has Been Paid

So, yes, there are costs to helping others. More than the ones I have listed above.

Yet, friend, I assure you the debt has been paid.

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, paid the ultimate price with his life so that we may be saved by grace and not works.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

While we live by grace, not works, our heavenly father is pleased when we honor him with our thoughts, words, and deeds.

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Hebrews 13:16

Furthermore, we are commanded to follow Christ’s example of service.

For even the son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 10:45

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Acts 20:35

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

And he served those who were considered outcasts, the untouchables rebuffed by society.

When I think of all my Redeemer went through for me, I am humbled. Thankful enough to fall on my face in gratitude.

How could I do anything but follow in his footsteps and fulfill his Great Commission?
