Get Plugged In and Ignite Your Passion for Serving Others

Let’s review what we have learned in our It’s YOUR Serve: Ten Barriers that Block Christians from Serving series.

We’ve examined how the families we came from have influenced the families we create, learned the importance of accepting our role as caregivers, and prepared ourselves to answer the call of service no matter what season of life we may be in.

Today, we focus on serving with both attention and intention.

Zoning In

You’ve seen the montages.

Flashing across the screen during a commercial from your favorite program or emblazoned across a larger screen at church. Groups of volunteers in matching brightly colored t-shirts, hard at work. Cleaning up debris, serving food, building wheelchair ramps, or handing out a meal to an unsheltered person to name a few.

As the images gleam before your eyes, a range of thoughts may enter your mind.

“Wow! Look at all the amazing work our church is doing!”

“Man, those folks are really making a difference.”

“That’s awesome. The Serve Team is killing it.”

And, more subtle, buried deep in the back of our minds, the thought,

“They probably have plenty of volunteers.”

I know these are just a few of the thoughts I have experienced when witnessing the efforts of our church’s Serve Team.

An Embarrassment of Riches

The reality is service opportunities are an embarrassment of riches.

There is always a need for willing participants. We all have a role we can play.

Plugging In

Whether it is greeting guests as they enter through the church doors, ushering congregants to their seats as service commences, or caring for the littlest worshippers in children’s church, we all can be of service.

Service opportunities abound in the community as well!

Do you have a talent for keeping your cool in the midst of a crisis? Consider joining a Disaster Response Team.

Do you have the gift of comfort when someone is in pain? Consider joining the Care Team.

Are you a Prayer Warrior? Inquire about how you can become an Intercessor and help others by appealing to God on their behalf.

From small groups to business leaders to providing hope in prison ministry to shepherding the hearts of single parents or mentoring young adults, a plethora of opportunities exist for you to sprinkle a little salt and let your love light shine.

Using Our Gifts for God’s Glory

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Corinithians 12:7-10

We have all been given gifts.

Maybe you need a little help discovering yours? My family’s home church, Gateway, offers a quiz as part of its Growth Path Track to help individuals uncover their unique gifts. Inquire about similar surveys with your church.

Discover your gifts. Embrace them. Own them.

Use them to further the Kingdom of God.
