Benefits of Homeschooling With YouTube: Skill Sharing Is a Snap (Part 2)

In Part 1 of our three-part blog series on the benefits of homeschooling with YouTube, we extolled the virtues of forming a virtual community. We also shared ways your family can remain safe on the platform. Today, in Part 2, we explore the wonders of skill sharing.

Skill Sharing

If you can think of it, there is probably content devoted to it. In some cases, there are entire channels devoted to it! While more affordable than private school tuition, homeschool costs can be pricey. In previous years of homeschooling, the majority of our homeschool budget has been allocated to out-of-pocket therapy costs and extra-curricular activities such as swimming, archery, and music lessons.

However, other subjects can also take a bite out of your budget. I am quite thankful to the YouTube content creators willing to share their time and expertise to help us learn a new skill. Below are a few examples:

Life Skills. Need to learn how to change a tire? Fix a sink? Tie a necktie? Make scrambled eggs? Well, there is content for that! One of our very favorite channels for this type of content is “Dad, How Do I?” And with over 4.56 million subscribers, we are certainly not alone.

Mess -Free Science Experiments. We LOVE science! Hands-on experiments are one of our favorite methods of learning. But experiments require materials. Even in the simplest form, materials add cost. We also love history projects! Project-based learning is BIG in our home. Projects also require materials, stretching our budget even further.

Read-Alouds to the Rescue. With weekly trips to the library for bundles of books, our library card certainly gets a workout. Although I typically reserve materials on hold in advance, there have been times when a particular highly coveted item was either checked out or not included in the library’s catalog. Occasionally, I purchase the resources we need. While literature is a love language for me, even a bibliophile’s budget has limits.

Tutoring. Need some help solving that math equation? Or, if you’re like me, could you use a little refresher before you get ready to teach your child the concept for the first time? I am eternally grateful to Ms. Maria over at Math Mammoth for making math easy and fun!

Have Knowledge to Share? Make Your Own Videos!

Often times I search for content and am unable to find what I am searching for, especially in the case of science experiments. Other times, I have family, friends, or fellow homeschoolers ask for teaching techniques or they simply want an update on our homeschooling journey.

Enter Kitchen Science Kids.

Kitchen Science Kids is our family’s project-based, hands-on, science experiment series on YouTube. We’d love to have you stop by and see what we’re cooking up!

We all have some knowledge to impart. Take a look at your strengths and consider sharing some wisdom with the world. If you can update your social media status, you can create educational content for YouTube. All you need to get started is your cell phone.

Coming Up

Next week, in Part 3 of our Homeschooling With YouTube Series, we learn ways YouTube can not only help students, but also parent-teachers. Be sure to check back for tips on how this social media platform can enhance your and your family’s homeschool journey.
