Are Kiziks Hands-Free Shoes Hype or Hope for Orthotics Wearers?
Hype or Hope
Hectic mornings.
We’ve all been there.
From frantically swallowing breakfast, to manically brushing teeth and hair, to snatching jackets off coat hangers, and of course, everyone’s favorite – trying first to find and then put on shoes.
Running around stir-crazy, rushing to leave the house on time.
If you’re like me, you’re thankful for any small mercy that can help make your life a little bit easier.
Well, Kiziks promises just that.
But is this innovative wonder-shoe, hype, or hope?
Kiziks for Orthotics Wearers: Friend or Foe?
Our son has worn Chipmunk inserts (orthotics by Cascade) since graduating from SureStep custom-made orthotics for about five years now. These inserts help correct pronation.
Finding shoes that work comfortably with the inserts can sometimes take a bit of research and often involves trial and error.
Not surprisingly, our son prefers slip-on shoes to shoes with laces. Beyond convenience, many kiddos with special needs, neurodevelopmental conditions, or learning challenges, such as Developmental Coordination Disorder/Dyspraxia and Sensory Processing Disorder, struggle to learn to tie their shoes.
We worked with our Occupational Therapist to help our son master shoe-tying beautifully.
While I certainly advocate for making an effort to help your child learn to tie his or her shoes, there are times when simply giving them a shoe they can put on independently is a “step in the right direction” for building their self-esteem until they are ready to learn.
We compromise by allowing him at least one pair of slip-on shoes to add to the mix of his lace-style shoes. Historically, the shoes of choice have been Crocs. As a parent, Crocs are a great option to have when you want to “grab and go.” Short walking excursions, such as running errands, brief trips to the grocery store, or gentle nature walks on solid ground – they’re fine.
But when it comes to sports, P.E., exercise, long walks, or more robust activities? Our kiddo needs a shoe where he can have proper support. A shoe that fits comfortably and will accommodate his inserts.
After seeing all sorts of ads for this new “wonder shoe” pop up in my Facebook feed, I decided to give them a try.
